How your Volleyball Officiating Training DVD saved my officiating
 career. 1/26/2009

Now the title here might be a little over stated... but I cannot tell you how much your training DVD’s are helping me. I will share some thoughts with you here.

I returned to officiating basketball in my late 40’s after our children were settled in junior high and didn’t want to hang out with Dad much. I initially returned for the exercise, a chance to be around a gym and the wonderful student athletes. I have had the opportunity to work youth, adult and all levels of high school basketball.

In 2005 our St.Louis Officials Association made a request for us to consider volleyball as an additional sport. Well, with the legs starting to be more sensitive to the stresses of two man officiating, I attended our state’s volleyball mechanics clinic. Because of the shortage of officials I received assignments right away. And with our format that means we are able to work freshman, JV and varsity all in the same session. Having not played volleyball competitively I had to pick the game up quickly from the people around me. I worked about twelve sessions each of my first three years.

I was not confident in my vision of the game and I did not feel I was making much progress. I did not feel valuable and at that point considered not accepting further assignments. Then during a re-tooling period in my professional "day job" I discovered your video offer in the NFHS Volleyball Rules book that arrived that summer. I again had a sparse twelve session schedule at that point. But after watching your Officiating High School Volleyball:  "Doing It Right 2008-09" DVD I received a great deal of confidence.
I watched some sections of the DVDs every evening for more than a month and throughout the season. I think I was then able to ask valuable questions during our Association’s volleyball meetings. From that the various assigners gained confidence in me and I was accepted into the area volleyball community. My schedule blossomed into over forty sessions during our girls fall season.
I have introduced your training DVD’s to my association and I am working on a way to see that all of our volleyball officials have access to them before our fall 2009 season. Thank you and everyone who helped produce such a valuable resource for the sport of volleyball.

P.S. I have found the excitement of being around the gym, coaches, table
officials, floor officials, players, fans and yes sometimes the pep bands
 has re-invigorated my officiating career.

"I was impressed with the way the presentation was adaptable to experienced refs and Jr Players alike. . . and I know what  I’m talkin’ about! ...Peter Meyer, USAV National Referee & Arizona Region Referee Chair

Have you Updated the Rules & Officiating Clinic DVD for 2008?  I bought one about May of 2007.  It sounds like you’ve revised that one for 2008 rules, and added more instruction for back row attack etc.  If thank is the case I’ll order the newer one as well!!

Y’all did a great job on the high school and I see that you’re refining your presentation and making GREAT use of visual aids.  The "visual" illistration and demonstration of the back row attack  "concept" in the H/S version was superb!  Keep up the GREAT WORK!! ...Bill Bagley, Raleigh, NC

The video was a great success. Everyone loved it. I have given all of my officials a copy. We think this is the best training video. We are looking forward to more in the future. Thank you."...Stacey Rymer, CVOA TN

"You have put together an awesomely challenging video that is capable of generating much thought and discussion. The design greatly facilitates learning as officials attempt to integrate the information you’re sharing into whatever level of officiating each individual has reached. If the point is to grow understandings (and I believe it is), you are helping officials to better organize everything involved in their officiating, Checklist is terrific. You had to choose where to cut off various learning modules in the interest of having something that fit reasonable time-frames for adult learning."...Rick Brown, Westerville, OH

"We handed out 46 videos to our total volleyball membership in northern Nevada this past Sunday (meeting and training date).  I showed a few clips from the video and then passed them out to everyone; they were pretty excited at getting something visual to help them with mechanics, rules etc. It really benefited the new officials the most but the veteran will use it as a resource as well."...Ellen Townsend, NIAA - Northern NV Volleyball Commissioner, State Rules Interpreter

"In order to officiate, our state association only requires you to pass an open book test and then take a clinic.  As a new official it would be nice to have something to constantly review and not just written words but actual video.  It just doesn’t make sense to me to throw new officials out there with just a few hours of training."....Thanks, Andy in Illinois

The video has been used by coaches as well and serves as a benchmark for coaches and their players to know what is expected of and what to expect from properly trained officials. "I think that others besides just officials could benefit from the DVD. I really enjoyed watching and learning from it, and I think it could totally benefit the "juniors" organization, not only because they officiate as well, but from a coaching aspect in what to expect from good officials. It was well done and well put together." ...Amy Farber Knowles, Coach Drake University

"Great material for officials at all levels!  We are providing a copy of the new DVD to every coach and official" ...Mike Dick, Iowa Girl’s High School Athletic Union

"Very informative, while Video 1 is not NFHS specific, it is done extremely well and should provide officials with concepts that will encourage consistency and greater professionalism" The DVD addresses many issues and situations not covered by the NFHS Rule Book; working with a partner, rapport with coaches and athletes, pre-match protocols, etc. This DVD can be a valuable tool for the novice as well as the veteran official and has received excellent reviews from many officials in the state." ...State Athletic Association Director

"I so much appreciate the high school DVD.  I have watched it several times.  What a resource!" .... Kevin Cartier, Marshalltown, IA

"Officials can always benefit from professional development." ...N.F.H.S.
